July 2008

Dear friends and family,

It’s been days since I’ve last updated you on this wonderful journey that God has blessed me with through your financial and prayer support.  Again, praise Jesus for this opportunity.

VISITING THE ORPHANS FROM MIENG CAO (HIGHLANDS)

The last few days, I was at Vung Tau, a city right by the beach.  Extremely beautfiul and cooler than Saigon (where my team and I are staying at).  While I was there, I can’t help but enjoy God’s beautiful creation.  It reminded me of those times in college at Catalina Island, where I gazed at the skies and sing to Hillsongs’ “Always” – “Did you rise the sun for me, paint a million stars that I might know Your Majesty”.

At Vung Tau, we met up w/ the orphans from Mieng Cao (the countryside, also known as a The Highlands).  The members of the church that have been amazing hosts to us put on this one week camp for these orphans every summer.  This is their third year.  Most of the orphans are in their teens, with a few exceptions that were younger tha 10 years old.

The first few days, they were really shy and introverted.  I felt a spirit of self-rejection, fear, and timidity.  The first or second day  I was there, Gsus spoke to me thise verse taken from Timothy – “For He did not give us a spirit of fear/timidity, but of power, love, and a sound mind/self-control.”  I felt that this was what He was speaking to me about the beautiful orphans.  For the next few days before and after activities, I kept praying and asking God to break down any bondages and to give these children hope and love in their life.  We kept reminding them of God’s love and how important they are to Him.  God definitely answered my prayers!  (continue reading…long, I know)

We not only shared with them G od’s love, but we also taught them about the practicals of being a female and male.  Because many live in the countryside with either friends, grandparents, or aunts and uncles (none have a stable home), they have never been taught about hygeine.  For example, I learned that most of the females were never taught about a woman’s menstrual cycle.  And well for the men… I don’t know because I wasn’t part of that! Hehe.

The last few days, we asked them to write their dreams down on paper so that we can pray for them and help them.  For some, this is probably their last year  because they’re coming of age and are entering into the working world.  Later, this will allow us to read their dreams, so that we’ll know how to pray for the little ones, and how to help the older ones transition into the working world.

Some things you can pray for:

Ø      Gsus will raise them up to be men and women of Go d who will serve Him until the end of time.

Ø      Permanent housing will be provided for.

Ø      There’s a lack of caretakers.  G od will raise up men and women who would have a heart to serve these children.

Ø      G o d will provide resources, so that the chur ch can help the older ones transition into the working world.

Ø      2 Timothy 1:7 in the lives of these children.  Please pray for them daily.

During the last few days, we took the children to Co-op Mart in Vung Tau, which is basically VN’s version of a super Target.  We asked the children if they’ve ever been to a place like this before and they all said no.  Because more funding was provided this year, we were able to take all 39 children to Co-Op Mart.  We pretty much played Santa Claus for one day.  We told them that they could pick any item in the store (school related, of course) and they were so happy.  They’ve never been to a store like this before!  Some of the students even went to the bookstore and asked P. Samuel, “Teacher, I want to buy a book that will teach me how to play a guitar because I want worship God with it.”  Praise God, yea?  They were so happy.  I think that’s when they broke out of their shell and this is when I saw God completely reign over 2 Timothy 1

When we asked them, “What do you like most about this camp?”  You would think they’d say, “The food, the beach, the nice air conditioning in the room” (mind you, THESE would be MY responses. Hahaha).  You know what they said?  “The love that I feel from you guys” and “How people just take care of each other here.”  That’s deep – They know Christ’s Love for them.

Finally, on the last day, we ended camp with a few recognitions and gifts.  The night before, the college students and myself put together a care package which includes lots of junk food.  I brought over 15 pounds of American candies given to my by one of my aunts (Anh’s mom) and some of which I bought with the money that you (the supporters) gave to me.  I decided to give away all of the candies to these children because they lack more than the orphans in Saigon (which I will get to visit them sometime this week).  I’m looking forward to meeting the orphans in the city!

After the whole camp was over, I got to talk to P. Samuel  about my experience.  He shared with me that he noticed a change in the countenance of orphans this year.  They’re less introverted compared to the last two years.  They’re also more joyful than they were before, too.  Praise God! I am thankful for the opportunity to participate and help out at this camp!

Anyways… it’s 1AM here and I’ll send you another update soon!  Probably in the next few days or so!  We just finished a conference and I can’t wait to send you guys an update on this!

Don’t forget to look at the attached pictures!

Cheers,

Thao Bang

learning to love those that don’t love those you love the most. did that make sense? anyways, perhaps this is something God’ll teach me while in VN.

QUICK RECAP OF FRIDAY and SATURDAY: i had a crazy friday — got a call from betty inviting me to hang out w/ the orphans in TJ mexico — thats when i drove to sGV to meet up w/ Alex, then to my house to pick up my passport, BACK to UCLA for friday night cool group mtg.  I JUST made it in time.  SIGHS of relief.  =)  hit the sack around 1:30AM — woke up at 5:15AM and off to TJ, MEXICO at 7AM. ((side note: circle K is awesome)).  Hung out w/ the kids… SO CUTE but kids can also be such brats as well! I hate my spanish. The whole time I was there, I was thinking about how I wish myles or my cousin cat would be there to help me w/ my spanish.  damn spanish language — oh how i hate thee.  It’s only because I have such a hard time picking it up.

friday night cool group:  i caught the end of it — just in time to say good bye to everyone and just in time to take advantage of their prayer powers. :) i felt refreshed and lovedddddddddddd. like L-O-V-E, LOVE. some things were spoken over me and I felt it was confirming why im going to VN — new perspective. learning more about jesus through His lens.  Looking fwd to a whole new pair of glasses…a new holistic view of Jesus and his corazon. *wink nudge.

Earlier that day, I hung out w/ my friend Alex.  He’s visiting from NYC and he hit me up.  had pho (gross) — he did, not i.  I had that broken rice dish… same o same o. it was so nice to see him again. afterwards, it was NUBI time. yay-YUH! that’s how i rolllll.

by  the end of friday night — I was left w/ only 10% to fundraise.  HOORAYS

And then today happened — SATURDAY happened.  my aunt is so generous. I love my aunt — I only came to really say goodbye to her before I leave for the motherland. again, you never know what may happen right?  I also got to see cat face — my OCD’ness came out when she mentioned myers-briggs.  haha.

After tonight, I am only down to 5%. Hoorays, Jesus.  interestingly enough, most if not all of my supporters have been from ppl that do not know me that well.  strange, but super cool.  thank you baby Jesus.  Yet again, He provides. :)

Just prepping myself! I’ll be gone for a good 2.5 weeks! SAD TIMES. One of our team members is just really sensitive to internet security — I had a hard time trying to get my itinerary. ughs.

But anyway, I’ve been trying to hang out with many of my friends this week — though I’m only going for about 3 weeks, this could very well be my last time here. Especially if something crazy happens in VN, i get martyred and die for Jesus — this would be it! Dramatic, I know. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW! I kinda like life here on earth right now, so hopefully Jesus will let me hang out here a while longer. =) Haha. I guess this could be the last goodbye — but maybe not!

btw, i’m $650 away from my goal of $2500! woo hoo! Praise baby Jesus. :D If anyone would like to support me, don’t forget to visit below!

(from a recent email) Hello friends and family — It’s Thao Bang again!  I hope you guys had a wonderful 4th of July and that you’re all doing well :)

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you who have been my support in the last year (or more, for some of you).  Your prayers, words of encouragement, and love has really blessed me in ways that I cannot describe in this email.  My vocabulary bank is not big enough to express to you how deeply thankful I am for all that you are and how God has used you help me grow further in my relationship with Jesus.  And trust me, it has been a bumpy road in the last several months, and I know I could not have grown to be who I am today in God without your friendship.

Prayer Request:
As you know, I will be leaving on a short term missions trip this summer from July 16 to August 2 to Saigon, Vietnam – Less than a week!  As I am spiritually and physically preparing myself for this trip, I come to realize that there are challenges, such as learning to work together as a team.  Through our differences and unique personalities, God is surely teaching our team how to work together in love.  Some other challenges include greater and deeper intimacy with Him in the midst of uncertainties and a recent broken car, which I must say… God hooked me up w/ a great mechanic who gave me an affordable quote!  And Praise God ’cause I now have a working car!

Financial Need:
The greatest challenge thus far is in the area of finance!  Before I forget, I must say that I am truly grateful for those that have chosen to partner with me financially and/or prayerfully in this trip!  Thank you, thank you.  However, I am less than a week away and I am coming short of my goal.  I have raised about $1,500 so far (I need to raise $2500 to cover our plane ticket, lodging, and food).  I still need raise about $1000 to cover the rest of my expenses and as a team, we are about $5300 short of our goal.  Please consider partnering with me financially — if half of you give $20, I will reach my goal.  Or, if each you decide to give  $50, the Vietnam Team will be fully funded.  Please pray and see if God leads you to support me financially.  I know our economy is not doing well, so please do not feel like you have to give.  I am ever so thankful for your prayers and friendship.

About the Orphanage in Vietnam:

  • Currently, the caretakers and volunteers are women.  We are asking and praying that God will raise up male caretakers to help take care of the orphans as well, so they have both male and female figures to look up to.
  • The orphans are provided with education, food, and clothes.  What they are lacking is a place big enough to house them.  A piece of land was recently bought in Vietnam for these orphans and the plan is to build a 2 or 3 story building to house them.  However, funding is needed in order to see this project executed.  Please prayerfully consider supporting this project financially.
